Faulty CrowdStrike update causes major global IT outage, taking out banks, airlines and businesses globally

Businesses across the world are reporting IT outages, including Windows “blue screen of death” errors on their computers, in what has already become one of the most widespread IT disruptions in recent years. The outage — linked to a software update from popular cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike — has affected computers running Microsoft Windows at organizations across various sectors, including airlines, banks, retailers, brokerage houses, media companies and railway networks. The travel sector seems to be one of the hardest hit, based on online chatter. CrowdStrike’s chief executive, George Kurtz, confirmed in a post on X that a “defect” in a…

AI music startup Suno claims training model on copyrighted music is ‘fair use’

Following the recent lawsuit filed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) against music generation startups Udio and Suno, Suno admitted in a court filing on Thursday that it did, in fact, train its AI model using copyrighted songs. But it claimed that doing so was legal under the fair-use doctrine. The RIAA filed the lawsuit against Udio and Suno on June 24, alleging that the companies trained their models using copyrighted music. While Suno’s investors have previously hinted that the startup didn’t have permission from the music labels to use the copyrighted material, it hasn’t been so directly stated as…

WazirX halts withdrawals after losing $230 million, nearly half its reserves

WazirX, a leading Indian crypto exchange, halted withdrawals Thursday after a security breach it called a “force majeure event” resulted in the loss of $230 million, nearly half its reserves. The Mumbai-based firm said one of its multisig wallets had suffered a security breach. A multisig wallet requires two or more private keys for authentication. WazirX said its wallet had six signatories, five of whom were with WazirX team. Liminal, which operates a wallet infrastructure firm, said in a statement to TechCrunch that its preliminary investigation had found that a wallet created outside its ecosystem had been compromised. “The cyber…

Epic Games CEO promises to ‘fight’ Apple over ‘absurd’ changes

It sounds like the latest dispute between Apple and Fortnite-maker Epic Games isn’t over. Epic has been fighting Apple for years over the company’s revenue-sharing requirements in the App Store. While Epic’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple was defeated last year, many of its criticisms were echoed in a different lawsuit filed against Apple in March by the Department of Justice and 17 state attorneys general. In Europe, meanwhile, the new Digital Markets Act seemingly allowed Epic to launch its own Epic Games Store on iOS, and to bring Fortnite back to the platform, with reduced commissions to Apple. However, Apple…

Unpacking how Alphabet’s rumored Wiz acquisition could affect VC

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is in advanced talks to acquire cybersecurity startup Wiz for $23 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. TechCrunch’s sources heard similar and added that deal discussions could last into next week. If this deal does end up getting done, it would be Alphabet’s largest acquisition yet. It would also be a massive exit for a startup at a time when exits, M&A specifically, aren’t rebounding as much as many had predicted heading into 2024. If the deal does get completed, it could affect venture and startups in multiple ways, some more obvious…

Microsoft says 8.5M Windows devices were affected by CrowdStrike outage

Around 8.5 million devices — less than 1 percent of Windows machines globally — were affected by the recent CrowdStrike outage, according to a Microsoft blog post by David Weston, the company’s vice president of enterprise and OS security. These are the first real numbers released by either Microsoft or CrowdStrike around the scale of yesterday’s outage, which was caused by an update to CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity software that led Windows machines to crash. (Mac and Linux devices were not affected.) Although the number of affected devices was relatively low, the havoc was widespread and global, affecting banks, retailers, brokerage companies,…

Sybill raises $11M for its AI assistant that helps salespeople reduce administrative burden

Sybill, a startup that has built an AI assistant specifically for sales representatives, said on Wednesday it has raised $11 million in a Series A round led by Greycroft. The market for sales AI assistants has grown quite crowded as companies have leveraged generative AI and large language models to help salespeople automate grunt work like filling out requests for proposals, updating internal databases and the like. However, Sybill says what sets its assistant apart is its ability to track and analyze many call transcripts and emails, which enables it to provide context-driven insights and summaries instead of only providing…

Leaf helps farms decipher the troves of data they generate

Farms produce a lot of data. From machines to irrigation systems, farms generate a lot of information that could be helpful to both them and the companies that serve them. Traditionally this data has been siloed across different formats, making it hard to read and build off of. Leaf is trying to change that. New York-based Leaf is looking to build the Plaid of farm data, co-founder and CEO Bailey Stockdale told TechCrunch. The company takes a farm’s unstructured data, standardizes it, and loads it into an application programming interface (API). This allows Leaf customers, who range from crop insurance…

Apple warns iPhone users in 98 countries of spyware attacks

Apple has issued a new round of threat notifications to iPhone users across 98 countries, warning them of potential mercenary spyware attacks. It’s the second such alert campaign from the company this year, following a similar notification sent to users in 92 nations in April. Since 2021, Apple has been regularly sending these notifications, reaching users in over 150 countries, according to a support document on the company’s website. The latest warnings, out Wednesday, did not disclose the attackers’ identities or the countries where users received notifications. “Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that…

US cyber agency CISA says malicious hackers are ‘taking advantage’ of CrowdStrike outage

As much of the world slowly gets back online after an outage caused by cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike led to global travel and business gridlock, malicious actors are also trying to exploit the situation for their own gain. U.S. cybersecurity agency Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said in a statement Friday that though the CrowdStrike outage was not linked to a cyberattack or malicious activity, it has “observed threat actors taking advantage of this incident for phishing and other malicious activity.” CISA warned individuals to “avoid clicking on phishing emails or suspicious links,” which can lead to email compromise and…

It’s not uncommon for developers working at companies of a certain size to have trouble keeping track of all the software dev-related tasks and bugs that need to be addressed. According to a 2024 survey by Dynatrace, 88% of tech leaders say that the complexity of their tech stacks increased in the past year and that this increased complexity has made it difficult to deliver a satisfactory customer experience. Months after Microsoft gained an observer seat on OpenAI’s board, the company is leaving the position of the non-voting seat. In a letter sent to OpenAI on Tuesday, Microsoft said that the company has seen enough progress being made in the AI company and is confident in its direction, according to Axios. OpenAI said that after this change, there won’t be any more observers on the board. That likely rules out reports of Apple gaining an observer seat. “We’re grateful to Microsoft for voicing confidence in the Board and the direction of the company, and we look forward to continuing…

Apple removes VPN apps at request of Russian authorities, say app makers

Apple has removed several VPN apps from its App Store in Russia at the request of the government’s communications watchdog, according to VPN makers.  Last week, Russian news agency Interfax reported that Apple had removed 25 VPN apps from its App Store in Russia after Roskomnadzor, a government body that regulates the internet — including what Russians can access — demanded the removals.  The internet in Russia is heavily controlled and censored, so Russian online users often rely on VPNs to circumvent restrictions and access blocked content.  On Monday, two VPN services — Le VPN and Red Shield VPN —…

CrowdStrike’s rivals stand to benefit from its update fail debacle

The CrowdStrike debacle — a bug in the company’s Windows software that had the disastrous effect of rendering PCs unusable — has disrupted flights, canceled elective medical treatments, and left many an office worker twiddling their thumbs for hours. Unsurprisingly, it’s also tanked CrowdStrike’s stock price, even as the company’s CEO, George Kurtz, promises a fix and systems begin to crawl back online. Rivals stand to gain. While it’s difficult to assess at present the business fallout from what’s being called the worst IT outage in history, investors appear to be sensing opportunity. A faulty software update issued by security giant CrowdStrike has resulted in a massive overnight outage that’s affected Windows computers around the world, disrupting businesses, airports, train stations, banks, broadcasters and the healthcare sector. CrowdStrike said the outage was not caused by a cyberattack, but was the result of a “defect” in a software update for its flagship security product, Falcon Sensor. The defect caused any Windows computers that Falcon is installed on to crash without fully loading. “The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,” said CrowdStrike in a statement on Friday.
